The United States Senate on Friday night approved a bill to avoid a government closure after a handful of Democrats left their resistance to the measure backed by Republicans.

The Senate voted 54-46 to continue financing the government, only a few hours before a closure had begun.

Republican senator Rand Paul voted against the measure, while Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Independiente Angus King, who hunt with the Democrats, helped approve it.

In an anterior crucial procedural vote, some Democrats helped Republicans to boost the measure, which will finance the federal government until September 30. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumeralong with eight other Democrats and King with the Republicans by carrying the so -called continuous resolution to a final vote.

Republicans control the Senate, but required a “supermaying” to approve the procedure vote, which surpassed a possible filibuster. The bill is now addressed to President Donald Trump’s desk to sign.

The final vote limits a week of tense conversations among the Democrats, who fought to unify behind a strategy to negotiate with Republicans. Although they control both cameras of the congress, the Republicans lack a supermayization and needed help from the entire corridor to vote the bill.

The Republican bill includes provisions with which Democrats are not happy. Some Democratic legislators expressed concern that the hands Triumph Too much space to promulgate your agenda in the next six months. Even so, the Democrats did not want to be blamed for a government closure, that the president and the Republicans made it clear that they would.

Initially, Schumer had strongly withdrawn against the stop bill, but reversed his position and helped convince others in his Caucus to vote in favor of the measure.

There was a risk that Trump and nearby advisor Elon Musk used a closure like a Executive Power poisonSchumer argued, noting that Musk and his so -called government efficiency department (Doge) could accelerate their cost cutting frenzy with fewer controls over their power.

Trump praised Schumer for supporting the bill: “I appreciate Senator Schumer, and I think he did the right thing. I am very impressed by that, ”the president told journalists while approaching Air Force One just before the final vote concluded.

Schumer’s support for the bill raided the way for other Senate Democrats to do the same.

After the procedural vote, Senator Dick Durbin, a high -ranking Democrat, said that “the last thing we must do is submerge our country in greater chaos and agitation closing the government” while Trump and Musk are “carrying a chainsaw to the workforce of the federal government and illegally freezing federal funds.”

Shaheen said that “he would play in the hand of the Republicans” with a closure would give Musk and Trump “power without control to continue dismantling the federal government.”

However, Schumer was criticized by some at the party for doing so, particularly at home.

Before Friday’s vote, Hakeem Jeffries, the main democrat of the Chamber, said that his Caucus opposed “strongly opposite to the bill of partisan republican expenses”, saying that Trump and Musk presented a “false option” between the stop point and a government closure. But Jeffries refused to say if he had lost confidence in Schumer.

Democratic representative Nancy Pelosi, former president of the House of Representatives, also hit Schumer before the vote. “Let’s be clear: it is not a good option for the American people. But this false choice that some are buying instead of fighting is unacceptable. ”

Progressive Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday that “I hope that Senate Democrats understand that there is nothing intelligent in their movement.” Those games will not deceive anyone. “
