The Sci-Fi Channel of the late 1990s was a realm of strange, obscure shows that you could only read about on TV Guide. Of all the strange things that were on the canal in those days, nothing was stranger than lexx.
The show aired late at night on the channel for a very good reason. lexx was the strangest, most confusing, and strangely sex-obsessed series in television history.
That is not a hyperbolic statement. lexx lives up to every word, and mMaybe now is the time to take a step back and appreciate this very strange series that broke all the rules of Science fiction and educated society.
Lexx’s origins and his total madness
lexx It was a joint German and Canadian production. It’s the brainchild of series creator Paul Donovan, who basically did nothing in entertainment afterward. lexx. Before lexxproduced some mostly average independent films, very small and invisible. There was nothing to indicate the kind of madness he had repressed inside his head.
Trying to explain the plot of lexx It’s impossible, and doing so could compromise you, as you’d have to explain how the universe is under the control of His Divine Shadow, a seemingly immortal evil being. He wants to subjugate the neighboring universe, also the Dark Universe.
If there is a plot, it revolves around some attempt by the show’s main cast to stop His Divine Shadow. However, they don’t always try very hard. Sometimes they are just too horny. Seriously, that’s part of the plot.
It Started With Four Very Weird TV Movies, Then It Got Even Weirder
lexx The first season is made up of four made-for-TV movies. In the first, we are introduced to a ragtag group of misfits and the strong, brave and heroic revolutionary heretic leader, Thorin, played by Barry Bostwick. Then your typical sci-fi hero, Thodin, is killed, and we realize that somehow the lazy, traitorous messenger named Stanley and a handsome runaway, recently converted love slave named Zev are our main characters.
Stanley H Tweedle is played by Brian Downey, and Zev is initially played by Eva Habermann. This will get even stranger when, in the show’s second season, Zev is suddenly played by a totally different actress named Xenia Seeberg, with a vague sci-fi motif attached. They also start calling her “Xev”, which is pronounced the same as Zev.

Lexx is a show with no real heroes, but it has a corpse
Stanley and Zev are not your typical science fiction heroes. In fact, calling them “heroes” is a bit of a stretch. They can’t accomplish much on their own, so the program gives them help in the form of a corpse.
The dead man’s name is Kai and he is played by Michael McManus. Kai is an undead assassin. Correction, not really, it’s completely dead.
Kai betrays the show’s villain, His Divine Shadow, when he regains his memories. Finish off Lexx, the superweapon. starship the program is named after.
The ugliest, dumbest spaceship in the history of science fiction and its awesomeness?
If Lexx isn’t the ugliest, dumbest spaceship in the history of science fiction, then I don’t know what is. It’s not ugly in an endearing way like Serenity from Firefly. Or in a fun way, like the strangely shaped Millennium Falcon.
No, it’s just nonsense.
Bad.
It’s not good.
Plus I want one.
Lexx is one of the central focuses of the show as he is where most of the episodes take place and has the power to destroy anything.
This is the Lusticon
There’s also a sex-obsessed robot head, voiced by Jeffrey Hirschfield. Oh, and let’s not forget the cannibal Gigerota, played by Ellen Dubin. Others come and go from the cast over the show’s four seasons, and are just as weird, goofy, weird, and sex-obsessed as the main cast.
If this sounds similar to guardians of the galaxy either distant landscapeIt is, but it’s much, much stranger.
lexx is full of fan service and innuendo that turns a device called the Lusticon into a plot point. That’s right, said the Lusticonn. To get back to ’90s cable, pick up the series. keep dreaming and mix it in a blender with distant landscapeand lexx would be the result.
Stanley Tweedle has no dance moves and Xev has no standards
The best and one of the oldest jokes integrated into this concept revolves around Stanley trying to get to Zev and then also Xev. Xev doesn’t seem to have any standards, so she’s usually pretty good at that kind of thing, except Stanley is the only person in the universe who actively rejects her.
So Stanley fools himself into thinking he’s playing the long game. Meanwhile, he follows Zev around the ship, drooling over her, like in that scene from The mask where Jim Carrey sees Cameron Diaz in a red dress, his eyes pop out of his head and he turns into a lady-crazed cartoon wolf. Imagine that scene repeated over and over again but without the special effects or the part where he shows off his cool dance moves and wins the girl over.
Stanley doesn’t have any great dance moves. Actually, as far as we know, Stanley doesn’t have any positive qualities. Stanley is like the player character in some kind of ’90s, text-based video game that comes to life and launches into space. And he is your main character, friends. The guy you’re supposed to root for and identify with.
Lexx is the David Hasselhoff of sci-fi shows
As lexx As it progresses, the entire tone of the show changes and I have to give a lot of credit to the production team. Seasons 1 and 2 of the show are wild and full of basic frat humor, but season 3 is much darker and becomes a somber experience.
Season 4 takes place on a contemporary Earth, and it’s probably safe to assume that this was due to budget issues that made the show’s elaborate green screen sets unaffordable. That’s right, even green screen became unaffordable. That’s the kind of budget, lexx I was working.
The budget cuts came despite the fact that lexx It was a huge success in Germany, Russia and Eastern Europe. you could say that lexx is he David Hasselhoff of science fiction programs.
To hell with the budget lexx runs through every possible story line you can imagine in the span of about a dozen episodes of season four.
How it compares to respectable sci-fi shows
If you are watching legitimate shows like distant landscape, Babylon 5and the extension, lexx It can’t be compared. Stacked against those great pillars of televised science fiction, lexx It’s lunatic garbage. That’s probably why it has been forgotten today.
To be fair, it was forgotten back then too.
I can’t make excuses for it. lexx It’s about to be a complete disaster. And sometimes it’s a disaster.
But usually there is something. A joke that hits the mark, a crazy sci-fi concept, or even a heartfelt character moment. Something that makes the show not the worst thing you’ve ever seen.
It’s crazy and it’s either horrible or great. Or maybe it’s both.
But lexx It is unique.
It is definitely unique.
What is certain is that the size of His Divine Shadow’s ultimate weapon, the Megashadow, is exactly the kind of silly humor we need more of in our science fiction.
The one thing about Lexx that everyone likes: Yo Way Yo
If there is something about lexxthat’s undeniably good, without any excuse, warning or hesitation – it’s the main theme of the show. It was added in season 3 and is one of the show’s best decisions.
He lexx The theme started out as a fight song from Kai’s past, the Brunnen G Fight Song. It was used in the first episode of the show. For lexx Opening credits, the merged visuals still aren’t great, but the sound of those voices singing in battle is so good it almost doesn’t matter.
