Few spin-offs in television history were as successful as “Young Sheldon.” It certainly never hurts that the show that spawned the spinoff, in this case, “The Big Bang Theory,” was wildly popular. much like how “Cheers” eventually gave rise to “Frasier.” Instead of going the sitcom route, this series focused on Sheldon Cooper’s younger years growing up in Texas, using a multi-camera format without a live audience. A small part of the show’s appeal is meeting Sheldon’s family, including his younger brother Georgie, who is named after their father.
Young Georgie Cooper was played by Montana Jordan in the 141 episodes of “Young Sheldon” throughout its seven seasons. So what draws a young actor like Jordan to a role like that, especially for so long? In a 2021 interview with GlowThe actor spoke about what initially attracted him to the show. In short, Georgie’s role aligned with Jordan’s real life.
“When I first read the role of Georgie, I thought I was reading an autobiography. It all lined up with my life in Texas. I played football and always got in trouble for having a messy room. I mean, I could sit here and Name 100 things Georgie and I have in common.”
Jordan may be 20 years old now, but when the show first aired in 2017, she was just beginning her life as a teenager. Actors tend to take advantage of life experience as much as they can. Since Georgie reflects his life up to that point, it makes sense why Jordan would be interested in the role. It also explains why Chuck Lorre and the producers saw fit to cast him.
What Montana Jordan likes most about playing Georgie Cooper
The main cast of “The Big Bang Theory” moved on to other projects in Hollywoodbut Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper in every episode of the show, continued the franchise as executive producer of “Young Sheldon” as well as acting as narrator. So he certainly had a say in who was going to play the various members of Sheldon’s family, including his brother Georgie.
In the same interview, Jordan talked a little more specifically about what she liked most about playing Georgie on the show. For the young actor, it all came down to taking the place of an older brother. That represented a significant difference from his real life.
“For me, the coolest part would be being able to play an older brother. I have two older sisters in real life, so I was always the youngest one and they would pick on me, but oh how things have changed on this project “Missy and Sheldon better watch out.”
While this show may be over, “The Big Bang Theory” universe lives on. CBS recently began airing a new spin-off, “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage”, in which Montana reprises her role as Georgie. alongside Emily Osment’s Mandy McAllister.
