Maguire hopes to renew contract with Manchester United

Harry Maguire is hopeful of potentially extending his stay at Manchester United, having had “positive” talks with the club.

Maguire’s current contract will expire at the end of the season, although United retain the option to extend it for a further year, keeping him at the club until 2026.

The England international was close to joining West Ham in 2023, but the transfer fell through.

Maguire has since found himself further down the defensive hierarchy following the summer arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

However, after a standout performance in United’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, the 31-year-old remains hopeful about his future at Old Trafford.

“I haven’t really thought about (my long-term future),” Maguire said.

“I still have this year with an option in my hands. But yeah, all the signs are positive right now and the conversation I’m having is really positive.”

When asked if discussions about a long-term contract were taking place, Maguire simply replied: “Yes.”

The center back was a surprise starter in Rubén Amorim’s lineup for the match at the Etihad.

Maguire put in a solid defensive performance, keeping Erling Haaland quiet as United scored two late goals to secure a dramatic victory.

“It’s been a tough start to the season for us and our fans don’t have much to cheer about, so it’s for them,” Maguire added.

“To be honest, I thought the game was a 50-50 game. It could have gone either way. “It is an improvement, but there is still a long way to go.”

The victory marked a significant result for Amorim, who has experienced mixed results since replacing Erik ten Hag as United manager.

“I think you can see we have a good structure, a good style of play, the way he wants us to work,” Maguire added.

“He is tactically very good. He has proven that he is a winner.

“And look, we’re still pretty new. I think it’s been here for a month or so now and we’re really looking forward to where we can go and where we can take this club. “I am sure he will take it positively.”
