An American influencer left Australia on Friday after the Government announced that he was reviewing his visa about a video he published his mother from his mother from his outburst.
Sam Jones, who describes herself as an “enthusiastic and outdoor hunter,” made his Instagram account private on Thursday after he was widely condemned by the video.
“There has never been a better day to be a Kombat baby in Australia,” said Interior Affairs Minister Tony Burke, in a statement after a government official confirmed that Jones had flown from the country voluntarily.
In the video, Jones, based in Montana, lifts the Wombat Joey for its front legs in the dark from a road, then flees from his mother.
“I caught a Wombat baby,” he said while he was a man who filmed his laughs. She returns the Wombat to the road after several seconds.
Burke had said earlier on Friday that the conditions of his visa were being reviewed to determine if the immigration law has been violated. “I can’t wait for Australia to see the back of this individual, I don’t hope he returns,” he said in the statement received by Associated Press.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese added his voice to criticism.
“Taking a baby from his mother, and clearly causing the mother’s anguish, it’s just an outrage,” he said.
“I suggest this calling, maybe I could try other Australian animals. Take a crocodile baby from her mother and see how you are going there. Take another animal that can really fight instead of stealing a baby from her mother.”
Jones, who also uses the name Samantha Stable, closed his social media channels to the messages and could not be contacted to comment on Friday.
The Wombat seems to be a common wombat, also known as naked nose wombat. It is a protected marsupial found alone in Australia.
Yolandi Vermaak, founder of the Wombat Rescue Animal Care of the Charity of Animal Care, said that separating the young Wombat from her mother created the risk that the mother rejected her offspring.
“My biggest concern is that we didn’t see that mom and the baby gather. When he left him, he seemed disoriented. He was away from where the mother was last seen. So we don’t know if mom and baby really met again,” Vermaak said.
Vermaak also asked Jones to say where the Wombat was after the video showed that the Joey had a skin disease. “The baby has bloody and it is a matter of time before he dies of sange, so it is important for us to find where this happened and make this baby and his mother try as soon as possible,” said Vermaak.
