Abby Jiménez: I drove a Dodge Dart Convertible from 1966 when I was 16 years old. I drove it for two years. When I decided to place this book in southern California, it really brought me many memories of growing in southern California. I thought: “I should write some of my own memories in books.” Obviously, it is easier than inventing things. So I did. I wrote my car in the book. Abby Jiménez: I always like to change tropes in my book. I don’t want to get bored as a writer in the same way that I don’t want my readers to get bored by reading the same over and over. I really enjoyed giving people Xavier. I think it was a fun difference from my previous books and the previous heroes that I have written.
